First check the database alert log to see if there is some error. Then login as sysdba using sqlplus (or svrmgrl on older versions of oracle) and do shutdown immediate, if it doesnt stop use shutdown abort.

The oracle process should disappear, if it doesnt then kill it through task manager, if that doesnt work there's only the on-off switch : (.

Hi Alan, I appreciate the quick response.
I could not connect using sqlplus as sysdba as the server dosent allow further connection..
I shutdown the m/c and restarted then it was giving the could not start the server..
    I am using Oacle 9i on Win2003.

I would like to know the cause for this problem

Check the alert log that might give some clues, also check the windows event logs.

    use oradim ?

personally I prefer to use ORADIM in order to start / stop Oracle instances.

    the command would be:

oradim -startup -sid <yoursid> -usrpwd <system-password>

    like:

    oradim -startup orcl -usrpwd manager

    goold luck

That is the oradim command, fire it from a cmd line/DOS prompt on the server.

for the rest of the oradim commands type oradim /? at the cmd line.
