    Unanswered: Oracle 8.0.6 to 9.2 Upgrade

    Looking for some guidance. Very new to Oracle and reading as much as I can as fast as I can, but haven't found the solution to my problem as of yet. Here is the pertinent information.

    Oracle 8 Home is d:\orant
    Oracle 9i Home is d:\oracle\ora92
    SID is ORCL
    Only available backup is from BackupExec's Oracle Agent
    Completed manual upgrade steps listed in the Migration document.
    Finished proofing initialization parameters so that no errors listed.

    Launching sqlplus results in the following error:
    SQL> startup migrate
    ORACLE instance started.

    Total System Global Area 71899720 bytes
    Fixed Size 453192 bytes
    Variable Size 67108864 bytes
    Database Buffers 4194304 bytes
    Redo Buffers 143360 bytes
    Database mounted.
    ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 7 - see DBWR trace file
    ORA-01110: data file 7: 'blah blah'

    The file is there. I am thinking that it is a simple misconfiguration as to where files are located due to being in the middle of the upgrade.

    When I try to log into the database with 8.0.6 Enterprise Mgr I get the following error:
    XP-21012: A database error has occurred
    ORA-01033: Oracle initialization or shutdown in progress

    When I try to start up the database after logging into 9.2 Enterprise Manager I get the same ORA-01157 and ORA-01110 errors listed above.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi,

    I'm not sure what you have done, but the thing is you can't migrate from 8.0.x to 9.x (if you want to migrate the datafiles). You first have to migrate from 8.0.x to 8.1.x and than to 9.x.

    If you have a very simple database with very few schema's you can make a export (with the 8.0.6 exp utility) and import (only the schema's not sys, system etc) it into your newly created 9.x database (make sure you create the schema names before importing).

    Perhaps you can tell us a little bit more about what you have done so far?

    Grt,
    Jeroen

    Thanks for the input.

    The documentation does say that 8.0.6 has a direct upgrade path to 9.2.

    I followed the steps for the manual upgrade listed in the Oracle 9i Database Migration Guide.

    I executed the following commands:
    ALTER TABLESPACE system
    ADD DATAFILE ’d:\orant\database\system02.dbf’
    SIZE 16M
    AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 10M MAXSIZE UNLIMITED;
    ALTER ROLLBACK SEGMENT system
    STORAGE (MAXEXTENTS UNLIMITED);

    I completed a full off-line backup of the database filesas determined with the following commands.

    SQL> SPOOL files.log
    SQL> SELECT member FROM v$logfile;
    SQL> SELECT name FROM v$datafile;
    SQL> SELECT name from v$controlfile;
    SQL> SPOOL OFF

    Then I got rid of the Oracle 8.0.6 services and created the 9.2 service
    C:\> NET STOP OracleService ORCL
    C:\> ORADIM80 -DELETE -SID ORCL
    C:\> ORADIM -NEW -SID ORCL -INTPWD abc123 -MAXUSERS 10 -STARTMODE AUTO -PFILE d:\oracle\ora92\DATABASE\INITORCL.ORA

    I then went through initorcl.ora and remarked out all of the deprecated initialization parameters and added some new ones recommended in the Migration Guide.

    When I launch sqlplus and try to connect to the database I get the error listed in the first post.

    I have verified that the Oracle-Home selected is the Oracle 9.2 Home. The Initorcl.ora file only exists in the Oracle 9i Home.
