    Unanswered: SYS login in sqlplus

I have a trivial question, but would like to know why I cant directly login to the system using SYS account.

I can login as a user, like abcd, and then issue command like
    CONNECT SYS/password as DBA

while if I start sqlplus, and try to login as SYS like

    Enter user-name: SYS
    Enter password:
    ERROR:
ORA-28009: connection to sys should be as sysdba or sysoper

    I get an oracle exception.
Can someone throw light on the same.

    Thanx and Regards

Simply because Oracle changed the rules with 9i and will no longer allow anyone to log into the DB simply as "SYS". Why are you unwilling to use the new syntax? Why do you insist on using obsolete syntax?

    Arrow SYS login

    Hi

I have started preparing for the 9i OCP, and thats why I need to try out all the possible things with SYS priviledges.

Since I am using a home development environment to screw up things, I am taking liberties with the same.

Thanx for the update on the new policies on 9i. (It feels similar to FTP, as in FTP you cannot login as root, only as users).

    Thanx and Regards

    Thumbs up

    Hi,
You can log in as sys/sys@connect_string as sysdba/sysoper(SYS account) or sys/manager@connect_string as sysdba/sysoper

    bye,

    Hi

Try this command at the dos prompt.

    sqlplus sys/change_on_install@[sid] as sysdba

where sid is the instance name like "ora9i" or "oracle9i"

Are you sure your init.ora include:
    Remote_login=excluse (not none or shared)

You can recreate password file and try again !
