I am noticing close-to-linear increase in db update delay with the db size increase (20Mb db takes 15s). MS Access Jet 3.51 db is on a network share on Win98. db update is done using recordset object and the update method.
Could you please advise on performance enchancements

1. What's the performance of the shared computer: hard-disk size, speed, free space? Can you upgrade it?
>> P3, 800MHz, 128 Mb, ~1Gb of free space. <<
What's the performance of the client workstation: CPU, RAM? Can you upgrade it?
>>It is P3, 64 Mb laptop. I'm looking for "software" solution for a given hardware. Also access delay is unnoticable if running program locally on either machine.
What's the network speed? Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabyte Ethernet?
>>Ethernet Connection is full duplex 100Mbps
Do you use hubs or switches?
What's the performance when opening a Word document from the shared computer when you update and save it?
<<Performance obviously slower than doing it locally but much better than db access from VB. Which is also expected since forming recordset and Update would take more time than open small size document.>>
<<Also, it is expected to have db Update delay rising with db size but is linear dependency expected for MS access (compacted) db?>>
