    Unanswered: Protocol adapter error

    Hi,

When I try to import or export Oracle data from the command line using 'exp' or 'imp' I get the error: "ORA-12560 TNS: protocol adapter error".

I used to be able to use 'exp' and 'imp' with no problems. Since then, I've aborted the creation of an OMS repository and aborted the creation of a new database. I don't imagine these would cause the error above but if anyone has any input, I'd appreciated it.

I found a site that suggests (given ORA-12560) to check addresses used for propert protocol specification or to turn on tracing and look at the error stack and check for lower level transport errors. I don't know how to do any of these things. Can anyone provide specific instructions on how to do this (preferably from the command line)?

    Thanks.

The error clearly states where you must look at ..exp/imp 's got nothing to do with oms repository...

    ping the host/client
    tnsping the host/clients
check the validity of the tnsnames.ora entries against that of the listener.ora of the server.
Test the connection in the net8 or oracle net services(version dependent or independent)

Anf hten check out hte syntax of your exp/imp as well..mostly pay attn to your buffers(we'll all that you must have sorted out I guess..

    Cheers!

The listener.ora and tnsnames.ora entries sync up.

I'm not worried about the syntax of my 'exp' since I get the error after typing:

    exp username/password

on the command line. I can't even specify how to do the export.

check "adapters" on the $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory..should list all of the Naming, Net8 Protocol adapters list, Also run "adapters oracle", adapters sqlplus", "adapters tnslsnr".
    Also Checked all the
    listener.ora,
    tnsnames.ora
    init.ora
and sqlnet.ora files from the following Path
    ORACLE_HOME/network/admin ..

if the "adapters" comman is giving following output..then it is ok...otherwise reinstall Net8 Protocol Utilities.

    $ adapters oracle
Net8 Protocol Adapters linked with oracle are:
    BEQ Protocol Adapter
    IPC Protocol Adapter
    TCP/IP Protocol Adapter
    RAW Protocol Adapter
Net8 Naming Adapters linked with oracle are:
    Oracle TNS Naming Adapter
    Oracle Naming Adapter
Oracle Advanced Security/Networking Security products linked with oracle
    are:
    RC4-40…
    RC4-56…
    DES40..
    MD5 Crypto-checking algorithm

Try this ..will definately work out..

    Thumbs up

    Hi,

This Error might be Raised due to the following Reasons :

    1. Attempted to listen on an invalid address
    2. Tnslsnr process died instantly
    3. Invalid protocol adapter in listener.ora
    4. Protocol adapter not installed
    5. Protocol adapter not linked with Tnslsnr
    SATHISH .

I know what you are getting that error. Before creating a new database the ORACLE_SID enviroment variable was set with your default database and when you tried to create another database that enviroment variable changed. The solution is very simple but I am not going to give all steps at once.

This is going to be resolved with 3 steps.

First Step > Write here the SID of the database where you want to carry out the export/import
