Unanswered: Instances and Schemas in Oracle Parallel Server Architecture

    Hi all,

I have a question on Oracle 8.1.7 parallel server Architecture.
It would be great if anyone please find time to respond to me.

We have an Oracle schema in an existing instance.
Now we have created a new instance.
Will we be able to access the old schema in the new instance
or I have to import the schema in the new instance to be able to access
the objects from the new instance ?

To be more specific are the Datafiles/oracle objects instance-specific ??

    Thanks in advance...

Re: Instances and Schemas in Oracle Parallel Server Architecture

    hi,

in oracle-wording a DATABASE are all objects and settings stored in datafiles, controlfiles etc.
a INSTANCE are all processes, shared memory segments, semaphores etc. which are created at the startup of an Database.
In an OPS-environment there might be 2 or more instances perfomring operations on the same Database on at the same time.
As a Schema is always stored in the Database it is available in all Instances of this Database.

    Hi,

You said 'As a Schema is always stored in the Database it is available in all Instances of this Database', so can we share the same user and database objects across the instances of the same database ??

    Thanks for your time..

Re: Instances and Schemas in Oracle Parallel Server Architecture

you can see it much stronger:
not only you can share anything between the instances of a DataBase in an OPS/RAC-Cluster,
ALL OBJECTS (tables, indices, procedures, packages, ... schemata, users, grants) are the same in ALL INSTANCES of this DataBase.
You have the same Transaction Isolation Level between sessions in different Instances as you have between sessions in the same Instance.
