Angry Unanswered: Linking external files to FMP5

    Hi,

On the net I found out that Filemaker 6 offers the possibility to link external files to a database. Now I'm 'still' working with version 5.5 (both Mac and Windows) and are not considering an update now. Does anybody know a way to link external files (images, so integrate in the database is not preferred) to a FMP5.5 database? I tried to do so with the scriptoption URL, but it didn't work for files, only for internetlinks.
I'm looking forward to a solution.

    Thanks already.

I'm not sure if this is available in 5.5. Try this: Create a container field. Place the container field on a layout. In browse mode, right click in the container field, and choose "Insert Picture". When the "Insert Picture" file browser dialog comes up, check the option at the bottom of the dialog, "Store only a reference to the file".

This option will display the image in the container field, but won't actually embed the image in the database. The field will only store a pointer to the location at which the image file is stored on the file system.

    Hope this helps,
    Mariano

you can store the URL as file://DriveLetter:\directory\filename.ext no problem, we do it with Word docs, from FMP 5.5 on XP. Not sure if this would solve your problem, but if you like detail it more and I'll describe in more detail what I do.
