    Unhappy Unanswered: Please Help

I need to know if there is a formula that will help me on this.
I have a workbook like below:
    A B C D E
    1. DATE CLAIM# ONGOING TCM
    2 11/01 346748 X JONES
    3 11/01 786345 JONES
    411/01 75845 X JONES
    511/01 67345 JONES
    611/01 678934 X JONES

What I need to do is count all instances of the name(D) and within that,
how many "X's" are tide to that name. Is there a way to do this? There are about 20 different names and the sheet runs about 3000 rows. Any help, is greatly appreciated. Thank You.

A quick and dirty way of doing it would be to use filters and subtotals.

How will you use the resulting information?

The "X" is always in colume "c" and only 1 x per row. Where there will be about 20 different names, and not always an "X" in colume "C", I would like a formula to count every instance of the name for total claims per name, and the "X" associated with the name, for ongoing total. Thank you
