    Unanswered: Autonumber being assigned before....

I have an autonumber set in my database. For some reason, if you start entering a new record, the Autonumber get's filled in before you save the record. Then if you decide you don't want to save the record and hit "ESC" the form resets. But then if you start to enter a new record, the Autonumber acts as if the prior record was saved, and gives the next number instead of what you would expect. It's skipping. Anyone ever see this? I always thought the Autonumber didn't get entered until you saved the record.

    Thanks

the gurus advise against using an autonumber to represent anything in the real world (like invoice numbers etc) ...so you shouldn't care about the "wasted" autonumber.

access will die long before you get to the 2-point-something billion max autonumber unless you make a special effort to "waste" thousands of autonumbers per entry.

if you want strictly sequential numbers to tie up with something in the real world, you must generate them yourself.

Oh. I guess I never noticed it before. Sorry for the dumb question.
