Red face Unanswered: Someone Please HELP! mySQL - Win Xp

Hello
I have been trying to set up MySQL on Win xp.
I am getting

C:\>cd mysql\bin

C:\mysql\bin>mysql mysql
ERROR 1044: Access denied for user: '@localhost' to database 'mysql'

C:\mysql\bin>mysql
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 25 to server version: 3.23.58-nt

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

mysql> show databases;
+----------+
Database
+----------+
mysql
test
+----------+
2 rows in set (0.00 sec)

mysql> use mysql;
ERROR 1044: Access denied for user: '@localhost' to database 'mysql'

The Darn thing show me 'mysql' but would not let me get into it or use it.

Things I have already tried:
______________________________
1. checked user.myd file exists in c:\mysql\data\mysql
2. checked to see if hosts file exists and has "127.0.0.1 localhost"
3. restarted service with shell>mysqld --skip-grant-tables

NOTHING works!
Any Ideas ?

Thank you

This problem does not have an Answer...
because all that was needed was a RE - installation of everything

Thanks

Have you tried:

mysql -u root mysql

Have you read:

yup, none of that worked - I tried everything.
it was probably something major
as you can see...
shell>mysql mysql did not work even with skip-grant privelages

RE-INSTALLATION WAS ALL THAT WAS NEEDED.
thanks for the thought though
