i have this urgent problem: i have an istance running on a oracle 8i server with sun solaris 8 and i want to connect to it from an client through sqlnet. The matter is this client is using some PowerBuilder applications customized on the old dbserver (oracle 7.3) with sqlnet (net8 came up with the 8i), then i need to connect to the istance still using sqlnet.
here there's the sqlnet.ora:
AUTOMATIC_IPC = OFF
TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = OFF
names.directory_path = (TNSNAMES)
names.default_domain = world
name.default_zone = world
i tried using SERVER_NAME instead of SID, but it doesn't work anyway.
there's another weird thing: i tried to connect to the dbserver from my laptop (i have Oracle 9i server on it) configuring the my tnsnames.ora with Net8 Configuration Assistant but it doesn't work!
it should be quite easy to configure it! IP, SID, tcp protocol, port and nothing else... but i can't connect to that istance!
(obviously... i can ping the host with the dbserver)
that makes me think the problem is independent from the different Oracle version between client (7.3) and server(8.1.7).
I found there's compatibility between sqlnet 7.3 and dbserver 8.1.7 (http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/c.../doc/index.htm), but i can't work it out.
I MUST be sure about it... can anyone confirm me about that compatibility?
Does anyone have any idea to suggest me?
What can i try to make old sqlnet client and new dbserver communicate?
