Unanswered: Figuring out if a job is running

I'm having a bad day, so forgive me if this sounds slow....

I am trying to be sure a job isn't running before allowing a user to execute a stored procedure from a VB app (DMO isn't going to work, it's too messy to distribute in this case).

I am trying to use sp_help_job, but it's not doing me any good as I can;t extract the result set into something usable. I tried to insert the results into a temp table, but get:
    Server: Msg 8164, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_get_composite_job_info, Line 67
An INSERT EXEC statement cannot be nested.

sp_get_composite_job_info does the same thing to build it's output data.

    1) Is my only recourse to replicate some of the functionality of sp_get_composite_job_info?
    2) Is the fact that my brain isn't functioning properly affecting my ability to figure out what should be a simple problem?

    TIA
