    Unanswered: Oracle 9i Lite - Newbie install & config help

    I'm taking an Oracle class and need to use SQL Plus to do the projects. I downloaded Oracle 9i lite & installed the mobile server option. When it was done I can log on to SQL Plus but it asks for Username, Password & HostString. Is there a separate config tool I need to set up users & HostStrings?

    These are the programs added to the start menue

    Oracle Installation Products
    Home Selecter
    Universal Installer
    Universal Installer Concepts Guide

    Oracle 9i Lite
    Oracle 9i Lite Documentation
    Oracle 9i Lite Release Notes

    Oracle - OraHome90
    Application Development
    SQL Plus
    Configuration & Migration Tools
    Net Configuration Assistant
    Net Manager

    Thanks!

    Does Lite version auto-create a database for you?
    You would have known when you installed cause you would see
    tons of prompts for passwords etc.

    If not, you need to create a database first.
    You can do this with the db-assistant

    if database was pre-created:
    log in as system/manager or sys/change_on_install
    or scott/tiger

    you can lead someone to something but they will never learn anything ...

    No, I don't think it created any databases. It asked me for some internet config stuff that I just typed in since I wasn't planning on using for internet apps. I don't even know how to create a database or set up users, the only items I can see installed are the options I listed. I don't see a db-assistant tool.

    reinstall

    You might want to reinstall. Check for an option for Oracle to build the db for you. It should be there. Did you do the full install or custom?

    Re: reinstall

    When it asked for the type of installation I wanted I chose mobile server. These were the choices:

    Mobile Server (515MB)
    Mobile Development Kit (224MB)
    Custom

    I uninstalled/reinstalled, and the only place I have to enter info is the Mobile Server Repository Database Information Screen
    Hostname
    Port
    Net Service Name

    I only want to use it on my machine to do my SQL homework, so left blank. It then asked me if I want to install Mobile Server Repository, I selected yes (the default) but it said i need jdk1.3 first. I just selected next.

    You might want to try installing the following:

    Oracle9i Database Release 2 Enterprise/Standard/Personal Edition for Windows NT/2000/XP

    There will be three Zip files download these, extract them to folders; disk 1, disk2, and disk3 respectively.

    To install, open disk1, open install folder, click on WIN32 icon; this will launch oracle universal installer, which will guide you through the installation process.

    Once asked the installation type choose personal edition. This should be the selection that installs a preconfigured database. Just make sure you choose the installation type that installs the preconfigured database.

    Once asked Name and SID type "orcl.localhost" and "orcl" respectively.

    Once installed start SQL Plus. You will be asked to provide a user name, password, and host.

    User Name = system
    Password = manager
    Host = leave blank

    At this point you should create a new user other than system and use this user to do most your SQL work.,

    Hope this helps I went through the same ordeal last term in my Oracle / SQL course. I know how you feel. Stick with it, it gets better.

    For what it's worth, I agree with Don.
    I think you want Personal Edition not Lite.
    That way you can have your test-database to run sql on.

    Great! Looks like it worked, I could log in and start SQL plus. Now, how do I create a new user?

    When logged in to SQL+ as sys issue:
    create user username identified by password default tablespace USR_TBS, temporary tablespace TEMP_TBS

    log in as system

    create user username identified by password
    default tablespace users
    temporary tablespace temp;

    since this is your personal DB I would just:

    grant dba to username;

    online

    Goto www.google.com and search of create user. There are many documents on how to create users and tablespaces. We are still here to help if you need us, but I wanted to let you know there are documents out there.
