Unanswered: Archive Log disk early warning

Is there any way of determining how much space is left on the archive log drive, from within Oracle. ie by using pl/sql etc?

considering the space is on the hard-drive and not in Oracle, that would be a no. Besides, from Oracle, you can't do anything anyways. You would need to do it server-side.

Many use scripts to zip/gzip archivelogs (zip everything but most current archivelog).
    This helps tremendously.

Also, you can always delete archivelogs dated previous to your last cold/hot backup.

I've seen at least one example on OTN about executing a program on the host from a database session. It think the example I have in mind was a Java stored procedure. Have not done this myself but there should be a way to accomplish this.
