Is there any good reason to use Backup Exec's SQL Server Backup agent instead of scheduling backup jobs from within SQL Server?

We are currently running a SQL Server maintenance plan which backs up databases and transaction logs to disk, and we also backup the databases straight to tape using Backup Exec SQL Server agent.

I'd like to stop running the Backup Exec Sql Server backup, and instead
run the Maintenance Plan backup, then use Backup Exec to backup the backup files to tape.

From what I've read, it seems that the Backup Exec SQL Server Agent is just a front end that allows you to schedule backups and to restore databases without using SQL Server Enterprise manager, and that it doesn't offer any additional functionality - is this correct?
