    Unanswered: Instance doesn't start

    I'm using Oracle 8i on Windows 2000 Advanced Server on a Pentium IV.

    When the service is started the instance is not started. I have checked at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME0

    ORA_SID_AUTOSTART = TRUE
    ORA_SID_PFILE = correct path to init.ora file

    If I start up the instance with the same init.ora file, I don't get any error.

    I have done this before on other installations and it works correctly.

    Any idea?

    hi,

    u might want to try to use oradim to edit the instance and set startup mode to automatic:

    in command box:
    oradim -edit -sid sidname -startmode a;

    Hope this helps.

    you probably also want to check that the user your service is starting as has rights to your files (and Oracle Home in the registry)

    if you have the service starting as the LocalSystem account and removed Everyone from the NTFS permissions without adding rights back to the SYSTEM user then it probably won't start....

    check your event logs for errors
