    Unanswered: can i restore a database only with device file???

    here is a database,database_student,on device device_student with device file name device_student.dat,if i drop database_student manaully without a backup(ex.dump ......),but it's device file device_student.dat still exists,is there any way to restore the database_student????

    Hi,

    By dropping the database with "drop database testdb" without having a dump, you have lost the data.
    The logical device is still there, but it's just free space which is assigned to the sybase server and points to a physical file on your filesystem.

    Unfortunately the data is gone.

    You can restore by using disk reinit & disk refit commands. Make sure you have the previous sysdevices output. Please try to simulate this problem in RND enviorment.

    along with my previous answer please be note that my previous answer holds only when your data is there in device file.
    But as you have issued drop database command all your data is gone..
