Unanswered: Can Oracle versions 8i & 9i coexist on the same system?

I have a laptop system (Intel Pentium IV @ 2 GHz, 1 GB RAM) with Windows XP Professional (fully updated) and Oracle 9i (ver.9.2). I need to have access to Oracle 8i (preferably ver.8.1.7) for some specific project. Can I install it in parallel to Oracle 9i on the same system, using - of course - a separate Oracle Home directory?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards,

with OFA - this should be possible.
have not tested it myself on a Wintel platform but works in Unix.

technically only the client compnents are certified on WinXP, so you might have problems running the server components on it.

if you can't get it to work, running a virtual machine using Connectix (now MS) Virtual PC or VMWare and Win2K would do the trick

I haven't tried it, but you might be able to run the 8i compoents/services in Win2K compatibility mode, not sure if that would work though

Can Oracle versions 8i & 9i coexist on the same system?

I have been running ORACLE 8i on Windows XP for quite some time now (without using compatibility mode) and I have not encountered any kind of problems (of course, this is not a production environment, so, one can't just judge effectively from this "private" experience...).

As far as OFA is concerned, I have heard of this type of architecture in Unix environments - I am not sure that it applies on Windows platforms as well.

I have no access to MetaLink at this moment, so, if it is not much trouble for you, Drew, I would like you to send them as attachments to my e-mail address ('ptsapralis@callcenter.gr').

Anyway, I think I am going to proceed in installing Oracle 8i using a separate Oracle Home directory (e.g., 'c:\Oracle817\...'), after shutting down 9i first - I don't need them to run the two of them in parallel, anyway, and see what happens.

Thank you both guys for taking the time to help me on this.
