    Angry Unanswered: Problems with Temp SPace for sort

    Hi All,

    I try to sort a file of 1.594.956.720 Bytes long. The Temp directory space is 6 Gb.

    Now, i lauch the sort command below

    sort -T /ds_tmp -o /home/DM/data/Storico99_sorted.txt -y0 -t\n -0.53 +0.0 -0.95 +0.69 /home/DM/data/Temp_storico.txt

    the Temp directory is fill up to 100 % and the sort stop with error.

    The S.O is AIX 4.3

    I need a to know (if possible..) why this...

    Perhaps, i could set some parameters....

    Hi,

    Please check with environment variable TMPDIR=/....., because command sort use /tmp and /var/tmp.
    Maybe help you.

    Hi Gustavo,

    Thank you for your help.
    I have used the '-T' parameter, where i have inserted the following path: /ds_tmp (Where ds_tmp is my tempdir sizing 6Gb).
    After, i've broken the input file in two pieces sizing 770 Mb, launched the sort and monitored the tempdir growth...
    Naturaly, the sort has successful terminated with a space occupation of 50 % ( 3 Gb on 6 Gb..). This value said.. I must add space on temp dir (sigh!!)... and that sort command haven't good performance.
