    hi! ,

    i am not able to logon to the database using sqlplus ...ORA 1034
    oracle not available

    i installed oracle 8i on windows XP with 196 RAM .

    opening the alert .trc file i find
    -- error opening redolog files

    logging into svrmgrl and trying to mount the database
    -- error processing system parameters

    can some body let me know whats going on ?
    and how can i run oracle 8i on XP with 196 RAM

    As you said you have error like ORACLE not available...do following,

    connect to command prompt
    set your ORACLE_SID to what you want
    (for e.g, set ORACLE_SID=YOURSID)
    startup nomount

    IF THIS succeed, then you r fine with your instance (memory) paramenter. ( i.e, total SGA is less then your available OS memory)
    ELSE try to tweak SGA such that total should be lass than 180M.

    NEXT, try ALTER DATABASE MOUNT;

    if this fails then, see what is the error message and look alert.log, or necessary trace file for further investigation and solve your problem.

    Hi,

    Oracle was not started up.Possible causes include the following:
    1. The SGA requires more space than was allocated for it.
    2. The operating system variable pointing to the instance was improperly defined.

    Retry after Oracle has been initialized. If Oracle has been initialized, then verify that Oracle was linked correctly.
