Unanswered: connecting oracle client 8.1.7 to oracle database 8.1.6

I have Oracle database server 8.1.6 installed on Red Hat Linux 7.2 and I am trying to connect to the database with my Windows XP machine using oracle client 8.1.7

After specifying the protocol, host name, port, userid and password to connect, when i perform a test to check the connectivity it gives me the following error :

    Connecting...ORA-12541: TNS:no listener
    The test did not succeed.

Even though my listener is running (I checed the status of the listener).

Is there something missing or is it the version problem. My server is 8.1.6 and the client is 8.1.7?

Somebody plz help. I have been struggling with this since a week without any success.

    Thanks in advance.

    Thumbs up

The connection request could not be completed because the listener is not running. Ensure that the supplied destination address matches one of the addresses used by the listener - compare the TNSNAMES.ORA entry with the appropriate LISTENER.ORA file (or TNSNAV.ORA if the connection is to go by way of an Interchange). Start the listener on the remote machine.
