Unanswered: Problem retrieving unicode data from Sybase

I've got a Sybase 12.5 database that contains native language data, i.e. shift-jis, big5, gb2312 & euc-kr. The database is configured with iso_1 charset and these data are stored in varchar colmns.

Now, I am trying to retrieve these data from ASP.NET. What I found is that the data are retrieved as single byte characters, i.e. 2 character in shift-jis is retrieve as 4 characters. I tried to convert these using Encoding.Convert() method in .NET but to no avail.

Can someone help me with this?

If you are wanting to store multi-byte characters in an iso_1 charset configured server, then you should use either TEXT or IMAGE column to store them.

Varchar is not the correct datatype as it distorts the data when it crosses the boundary.

Another choice is to build a server with UTF-8

That's my problem. The application, a 3rd party product, is already running on that database configured with iso_1. Everything works fine until when we tried to do this web interface to it. Is there anyway to make this work without changing the schema or default charset?
