    Question Unanswered: Securing MSDE

    Greetings,

Is there a way to configure MSDE so that an NT administrator does not have permissions.

We are trying to decide if we can migrate an application to MSDE. Our requirements dictate that users cannot access the database through other means.

With another vendor db, we install an encrypted password in the registry so that only the application can access the database.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Mike

    Possible Solution - Securing MSDE

It was suggested in another forum to remove the default

    BUILTIN\Administrators

Login group from the security. The suggestion came with a disclaimer that Microsoft would balk at the idea.

You can make the instance of sql server accept sql server authentication only. Then you must supply a native sql server login and password to access the database. Your windows logon won't get you in.

    Two authentication choices

I am pretty sure you are only allowed to choose:
    Windows authentication only
Mixed Mode authentication (Windows and SQL)

If you can set to only SQL authentication, please post or refer to how that can be done. Removing the BUILTIN/NT... and other NT logins is the only way I have found to do something that has the effect.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I stand corrected. According to this article:

You can't set MSDE to SQL Authentication only. Sorry.
