    Cool Unanswered: dual column(s)

    its a doubt...

    Why we are getting 1 column (dummy) when querying dual table in open stage and 4 columns in mount stage.

    Database mounted.
    SQL> select * from dual;

    ADDR INDX INST_ID D
    -------- ---------- ---------- -
    016133C0 0 1 X

    SQL> desc dual
    ERROR:
    ORA-04043: object dual does not exist

    Hope anyone help me.

    WHEN I DESCRIBE DUAL I GET THE FOLLOWING

    SQL> DESC DUAL;
    Name Null? Type
    ----------------------------------------------------- -------- ---------------
    DUMMY VARCHAR2(1)

    LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE HAS CREATED A TABLE IN YOUR SCHEMA CALLED DUAL.

    I HAVE TRIED AND ORACLE HAS ALLOWED ME TO CREATE A TABLE CALLED DUAL

    SQL> DESC DUAL
    Name Null? Type
    ----------------------------------------------------- -------- --------
    ED NUMBER
    TEST NUMBER

    Red face Re: dual column(s)

    Mr.Edwinjames, its not like u once open the database describe the dual...
    The database should be in mount state ie.. >>STARTUP MOUNT,
    and try "select * from DUAL;".

    Hope u and others will try it and revert back with the answer.
