    Unanswered: pg_dump & regular backups

    Hi all,

I'm writing a client app (VB & ADO) that requires the database be backed up regularly. After checking the archives on this forum, it seems that it is not possible to issue a pg_dump command via SQL through ADO, so now I'm wondering:

    1) can pg_dump be scheduled from within the database (say, every night)?
    2) is it possible to write a PostgreSQL procedure to call the pg_dump (then I could simply call the procedure from the VB client)?
    3) dbTools has an admin tool that seems decent enough. Is it possible to schedule dumps through this tool?

    All advice is greatly appreciated!

    There are 2 solutions:

    1. write a stored procedure that calls the pg_dump.
but it must be a untrusted version that can do system calls

    2. use cron:
use cron to check a file every minute
use your vb-app to create the file
if this files exists do the dump
--Postgresql is the only kind of thing--

Thanks, eperich. Both are good ideas. I'm suprised that the developers haven't added this feature into the db such that it could be issued via SQL command. It would be nice.
