    Unanswered: Trouble in AIX

I would like to install sybase ASE 12.5 on AIS 5.2.
When i use "srvbuild" to build the server and the master device is created, the error message prompted out (unable to boot the <server name>

Therefore i just built up the backup server and the ASE server cannot be set up.

    How cn i cater it

This is the log file. What's about the errorlog ?
Are you sure that the ASE is not already up (check with showserver) ?
Did you configure the shmmax ?
Are you creating a new server or upgrading an old one ?

    Check the Sybase release bulletin.
You must add the entry in /etc/system

    FYI: http://www.isug.com/Sybase_FAQ/ASE/S...5/Q10.5.4.html

    Just did this last week

your in for some fun. Getting Sybase to work on AIX 5.2 took setting up Asynchronous I/O.

    The magic formula is:

    lsdev | grep aio
This should show you a list of devices set for asynch i/o.

    mkdev -l aio0

<aio0 is the disk device that will store sybase, so yours might be different>

IBM wrote a cool doc on setting up sybase on aix5.2. Google for the link.

Do some homework on setting up asynchronous disk i/o on the aix server. Apparently you have to tell 5.2 to use a legacy i/o system inorder to run Sybase.

Even if you call sybase they will tell you you have to set up asynch i/o but they don't know how to do it.

    Good luck.

It seems that the setting is complicated.

Would you mind giving me more details

That's as good as it gets

Guess you will have to contact either IBM or Sybase.

Before you install the sybase software, you have to set the disk to use the legacy asynchronous io. You do this using the mkdev command.

    mkdev -L <device name>

    mkdev -L aio0

I suggest rebooting the unix box after executing this command to make sure it stays after you restart the unix server. Look up the mkdev -L command on the ibm support web sites.

After you enable asynchronous i/o, the sybase install will work fine. You will be able to build the sybase server and life will be good.

    Good luck.

I would like to know what is the device name.
That's mean i need to install the sybase on the device "aio0"

But actually i would like to install on other device.

During the setup, you need to specify the 2 main devices (1 for master and several other small databases, and 1 for sybsystemprocs). These devices can be fils systems or raw devices.

    Talking I found the doc

    Do a google on
Quick installation guide for Sybase 12.5.x on IBM eServer Pseries with AIX 5L.

This doc was written by IBM and you will probably find it on thier site.

    Google rocks!

Here is the link to the doc that I was describing.

this is what is needed to get Sybase running on Aix 5.2.
