    Red face Unanswered: client cofiguration problem

    I have installed oracle 9.0.1.1 cleint on a windows 2000 professional and tried to connect it to the server by giving tnsnames.ora like this

    MYDB =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = sys10)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = MYDB)
    )
    )

    and tried to connect using sql plus in client but the client application got stuck... please tell me what all thing that has to be considered when configuring and connecting the client.

    thanks...

    Post the error codes and messages u received.

    Host u have mentioned as sys10, is this mentioned in HOSTS file!!

    otherwise just give the IP Address instead of SYS10.

    Hell, is the database even up and running?
    Is the Listener on the db server up and running correctly?

    Re: client cofiguration problem

    According to your lsntctl status the only databases registered are: MODOSE & SYS10.

    In your tnsnames.ora you refer to the service_name (database instance) as MYDB. Either do one of the following: If there is a database instance called MYDB, you can manually add the entry in the listener.ora file, or if the database instance is actually SYS10, change the SERVICE_NAME=MYDB to SERVICE_NAME=SYS10 in your tnsnames.ora.

    You can also try "tnsping MYDB" w/o the quotes. Let it run, and it will at some time timeout should the instance not be located.

    Talking Re: client cofiguration problem

    Actually, the SERVICE_NAME is SYS10 and I mentioned as MYDB... soory for that....
    anyway i reinstalled client software in another machine and I selected manual selection of configuring net8 instead of automatic directory service name selection... then I tried tnsping and its pinging and is connecting via SQLPlus..
    Thanks alot to u all...
