    Red face Unanswered: re: sqlplus NOT RESPONDING

    hi! ,

    i am running oracle 8i on windows NT 4.0.

    i login into sqlplus as SYS.

    i write the following query ..

    select table_name from dict where comments like '%schema%';

    sqlplus freezes and i have to exit the session from windows task manager.

    why is this happenning ?
    how do i rectify it ?

    I ran that query, not as sys, as one of our viewer accounts... it worked just fine... no rows returned though...

    maybe you should change the query to get another result eg..

    select table_name from dict where comments like '%%';

    maybe it appears frozen, because it is thinking, if there are thousands of rows to return, it might take a while, i am running 8i on NT as well... what are your system specs?

    Yeah, ok.. if you are running that query locally, then your system is going to be quite slow. If you are querying a remote DB, it could also be a slow system. As far as the query statement itself is concerned, it should run.

    Good luck,

    I do not think your system is freezing. I think it is in the back room screaming in agony as it tries to fulfill your query. :-) Not that your query is wrong, it is just that you are asking alot. You are saying "read every row, check if any 6 characters within that row's comment is 'schema'". The db isn't frozen, it is on it's knees trying to stand up under the stain.

    using like '%%' is not going to help. Might as well just say nothing, %% will return every row (except maybe Nulls) anyway. Actually just returning every row would probably be faster, but not usefull.
