    Kind sir,

    I did a cd to /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7.
I then typed two pipe symbols ||. The system

said " syntax error "|" is not expexted"

    Thanks

    Joel,

I did a ls -ll and all the files where oracle/dba. I think that this is what you wanted me to do ?. I will look at some of the other directories to check. I had to re set up the users when I loaded the new os. Do you think there are any settings in the user/group set up that I should be looking at ?. Thanks

    rbs01.dbf showed oracle/dba with -rw-r--r-- permissions.

I looked at the oracle help and it said Cause: The background process was either unable to find one of the data files or failed to lock it because the file was already in use. The database will prohibit access to this file but other files will be unaffected. However the first instance to open the database will need to access all online data files. Accompanying error from the operating system describes why the file could not be identified. *Action: Have operating system make file available to database. Then either open the database or do ALTER SYSTEM CHECK DATAFILES. I am not totaly sure what this all means.

"Accompanying error from the operating system describes why the file could not be identified."

    What was the O/S error?
It should indicate why it couldn't identify the file.
