Unanswered: Php mysql forum mark as read

How php mysql forum mark as read?

I have problem to make my own written small forum to mark as read for individual users and each topic.

I was wondering how a php mysql forum can mark those posts that each users haven't read or new posts... Someone can enlighten me? Or help me in this part?

    Thanks a million

    You wrote it yourself?

Well you should be able to figure that out; usually it would by having a table which stores which topics/threads users have viewed.

    i.e.

topics ---< viewed by >---- users

I thought of that but it doesn't seem to work in this way. That's why I'm seeking for advice.

Imagine I have 1000 users and 20,000 topics, it will have to insert these huge datas to the table every time the users visit...

    Yep!

I can't think of any other way of making sure - i.e. cookies would work as they can be deleted.

I think this is how most of these forums work...
