    Question Unanswered: how can I . . .

How can I retrieve only a single "instance" a field/column entry among thousands?

    Thanks,

A little more information would be helpful in order to answer your question.

Details on the table and what you are attempting to extract would be good.

    Use DLookup function.

    Example:
in a table [Invoices] you have a field [Invoice From]
    The code would be:
    DLookup("[Company ID]", "[Invoices]", "[Invoice From]=" & *condition*)

*condition* could be a variable, another field in the table, control on a form... etc.

    Ooops. That would be

    DLookup("[Invoice From]", "[Invoices]", "[Invoice From]=" & *condition*)

    Where:
[Invoice From] is the field you want to look up.
[Invoices] is the table to look it up from.

    Jack:

Thanks for your patience ... I want to retrieve one occurence of each instance in a field. So in a field/column titled "Record Formats" there are several thousand entries that look like this:

    Photographic Prints
    Audio-visual tape
    Audio-visual tape
    Photographic Prints
    Manuscripts
    Photographic Prints
    Manuscripts
    Subject Files
    Photographic Prints
    Subject Files
    Photographic Prints
    Audio-visual tape
    Manuscripts
    Manuscripts
Subject Files . . . (etc. into the thousands of records)

The result of my query would look like this (one instance of every type):
    Photographic Prints
    Audio-visual tape
    Manuscripts
    Subject Files

    Thanks,
    Bryan
