    Unanswered: database link

How can I create a database link from Oracle 8.1.7 to SQL2000?

    I tried somEthing like this:

    CREATE <link_name>
    CONNECT TO <user_name> IDENTIFIED <password>
    USING '(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<ip_add ress)(PORT=1433))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=sid_name)))'

    I also tried

    CREATE <link_name>
    CONNECT TO <user_name> IDENTIFIED <password>
    USING 'entry_name_in_tnsanmes.ora'

and made appropriate entry in tnsnames.ora with details similar to above

Both times sql returns 'link created' but then i cannot select from table in link database. I am trying this by:

    SELECT * FROM <table_name@link_name>

    What am I doing wrong???

On same Oracle server I have also MS Access and using ODBC I can connect from Access to SQL server table, so there does not seem to be a network problem.

    By the way,

When I try select statement with first type of link I am getting this error message:

    ORA-12537:TNS:connection closed

When I try with 2nd type of link I get:

    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-28509: unable to establish a connection to non-Oracle system
    ORA-02063: preceding line from link_name
