    Unanswered: Create manually a database in Window (XP)

    Hi,
    I would like to create a Oracle database manually in my PC (Window XP) just to see one time how this works and what I need to do.
    I have the Official Oracle class book for the certification 1Z0-031 (Dba Fundamental 1) and the Sybex book but I can find how to do it.
    Because I understand that I need an instance for my new database, I would like to know how to create this instance.
    I already have two databases in my PC (Create with the Database Configuration Assistant).

    For the moment I just created my new initERW.ora (My database will call ERW). I work with the Password File authentication and my REMOTE_LOGIN_PARAMETER is setting to SHARED.

    CORE_DUMP_DEST=c:\oracle\admin\ERW\cdump
    TIMED_STATISTICS=TRUE
    USER_DUMP_DEST=c:\oracle\admin\ERW\udump

    # Control File Configuration
    CONTROL_FILES=("c:\oracle\oradata\ERW\control01.ct l",
    "c:\oracle\oradata\ERW\control02.ctl",
    "c:\oracle\oradata\ERW\control03.ctl")

    I tried to connect via SQL*Plus but :
    sqlplus /nolog

    connect SYS/sys04 AS SYSDBA

    ERROR
    ORA-12560: TNSrotocol adapter error

    I know that I need to mount the new instance (ERW) but how can I mount one instance that doesn't exist? How can I create it? Need I to put one already existant database in the ORACLE_SID?

    Is somebody know how I can find a "real" documentation to construct a Oracle database manually in a window platform. I search in some forums but didn't find any responses (The Oracle documentation gave me the same error...).

    I am very lost....

    Thank you...

    setup the Oracle environment variables,

    My Computer (right click)-> Properties -> Advanced -> Environement Variables - > System Variables

    and click New button, setup the ORACLE_BASE and ORACLE_HOME,
    ORACLE_SID

    reboot (I never trust the windows), and try again

    you must create new instance. you can do it with oradim, but first set environment variable oracle_sid=new_instance and restart your computer. create new_instance:

    ORADIM -NEW -SID NEW_INST -STARTMODE M
    ORADIM -EDIT -SID NEW_INST -STARTMODE A

    and then create password file:

    orapwd file=ORACLE_HOME\database\PWDNEW_INST.ora password=NEW_PASS

    Now you can login and startup database with nomount option:

    sqlplus /nolog
    connect sys/NEW_PASS as sysdba

    STARTUP NOMOUNT PFILE=your_pfile_path

    Now you can create database with create database statement

    Hope this help.
