    Unanswered: ORA-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME.....

    Hi,
    I created manually a Oracle database in my Window station (XP) and I tried to connect into it with SQL*Plus but when I try to login I received the message :

    ORA-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect descriptor

    What have I to do? I just add in the file ...oracle\ora92\network\admin\tnsnames.ora one block about my new database (ERW) :

    #####################################

    # TNSNAMES.ORA Network Configuration File: C:\oracle\ora92
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

    OEMREP =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Willer_family)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = OEMREP)
    )
    )

    HR =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Willer_family)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = HR.oracle.database)
    )
    )

    ERW =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Willer_family)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = ERW)
    )
    )

    INST1_HTTP =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Willer_family)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = SHARED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = MODOSE)
    (PRESENTATION = http://HRService)
    )
    )

    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC0))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = PLSExtProc)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
    )
    )

    ############################################
    I can connect in my database with sqlplus but I would like to set up this new database to work like a database build by Database configuration Assistant to improve my knowledge.....

    Thank you for your response....

    You should also update the listener.ora file for the new service name.
    You can do that by adding new entries in the SID_LIST_LISTENER section of listener.ora file for sid <New_SID>
