Unanswered: Updateusage vs updatestatistics
I am unclear on how dbcc updateusage (which fixes entries in sysindexes) differs from update statistics.
When would you use one vs the other? Are they any downsides to running these (other than a short performance hit?)
Any clarity my fellow dba's can provide is greatly appreciated!
update statistics updates the statblob column in sysindexes. Used to update statistics so the optimizer choses the most efficient execution plan.
updateusage updates the rows, used, reserved and dpages columns in sysindexes. This is used to sync space counters - look at sp_spaceused.
