    Unanswered: Master Backup Frequency

    Hi,

On a large production SQL servers how often should the Master and MSDB Backups be performed?

We currently do one every night but I am thinking this is overkill, would once a week be sufficient?

    Cheers

MSDB .. i would recommend every night

Master .. once in a week and whenever you do some major DB maintainance would be fine.

Is there any harm in doing it every night? Other than maybe a performance issue?

Even native backup takes less than a minute, unless you have many databases with dozens of files/filegroups each and thousands of logins, or if you have a lot of objects that were accidentally created in master. Your criteria and ultimately the final answer should based on what data residing in master is important to keep track of on a daily basis. In our environment we back it up daily.
