    Unanswered: Serious Problem

    I have a serious problem.
i am running orcale 7.3.4 on Sco unix 5.0.6 with 2 gb ram.My oracle hit ratios like buffer, row and library hits are more than 95%
My problem is that when i am giving some queris or little bit sorting my system get hangs up.It is not allowing me to login.
    at this stage SAR returns
    user server idle
    100 0 0

can u tell me where i have to investigate further to finf out the solution
    thanks in advance

Praveen, start by increasing the SORT_AREA_SIZE parameter. The system hanging could be from Oracle going to TEMP tablespace to perform sorts, especially if you've noticed the slowdown occuring when sorts are going on.

From your 95% hits in library and buffer caches, it sounds like those are in an acceptable range.

Do you have an OS issue or a DB issue?
any errors in alert_SID.ora or SCO's messages file?
Can you run bstat/estat to collect Oracle performance data?
Enable SQL_TRACE & run problem query. The run tkprof.

I think I know what the problem is...

    Sco unix 5.0.6
sorry... someone had to say it...

seriously... do you know what processes are eating up 100% of the user cpu time? plus... maybe run ps or top to identify the process(')

what everyone else is saying too...
