Unanswered: Best Way to Learn - Please help a newbie.

Hi. I'm new to the forums, and I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this, but here it goes :

I want to design a database program that would mine baseball and football statistics from the web. For example, I want it to connect to and download different stats after a game is completed so I can sort through the data later.

Now, I'm completely new to database developement, but I'm a fast learner and I decided I would learn how to do it myself rather than hire a programmer to do it for me so I can continually tweak the program in the future.

    So, my questions are :
    1. Would MS Access be a good program to use for this kind of thing?
    2. If so, what are good books or training CD's to learn how to do this?
    3. If not, what other programming language or database program should I be using?

    Thanks so much in advance.

Personally, I would use visual basic for the program (getting the data, storing it in access and displaying it later) and MS Access just to store the data.
There are many good books on VB6 out there, when looking for one, try to find one which has a chapter or two devoted to database development.
