I'm developing a database design that must be interpretable in all software and formats. Dbf has 10 characters as an upper limit of the field name. Do anyone know if there are some formats that only can have 8 characters in the field names?
Should I continue with 10 or should I only use 8 characters?
Forth only supports four characters. Some dialects of MUMPS still only use six characters. I can't think of anything that supports eight.
For real world purposes, I can't imagine a real need to support anything less than ten characters, and even that is a real stretch. Every commercially viable database I can think of that is still in use today supports at least 16 character names.
