Question Unanswered: text to hyperlink then back to text

While updating a database a text field was accidentally changed to a hyperlink in the properties window. When I changed it back to text, the hyperlink tag was added to the end of the data. For example:

the original text was " Richmond, VA",
the hyperlink turned the text into a blue underlined "Richmond, VA",
upon changing the hyperlink back to text, the field changed to "Richmond, VA#http://Richmond, VA#"

Is there anyway to remove the tag connected to the text without deleting it explicitely? I've tried using Find and Replace but it doesn't recognize the tag when it searches. Therefore, it won't allow me to replace/delete the tag.

This is an idea, I don't know if it will work.

Make a new table with the field as a text datatype. Then insert all the data into the new table, maybe it will automatically remove the hyperlinks?

I tried creating a new field and a whole new table with a text datatype and copying the contents of the column and I still have the same problem.
