    Unanswered: make: not found

    Hi,

    I am a Solaris novice and am trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 Client on a fresh installation of Solaris 8 (no patches).
    The Oracle install guide states the following is required:

    ////////////////////
    Required Executables

    To determine if you are using the correct system executables, enter the following
    commands:

    $ /usr/bin/which make
    $ /usr/bin/which ar
    $ /usr/bin/which ld
    $ /usr/bin/which nm

    Each command should point to the /usr/ccs/bin directory. If not, add
    /usr/ccs/bin to the beginning of the PATH environment variable in the current
    shell. See "PATH" on page 2-12 for instructions on setting the PATH variable.
    ////////////////////

    I don't have "make" installed.

    # which make
    make: not found

    My path is:

    PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/etc:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/ucb

    I have tried doing a find for make but it is definitely not installed.

    How do I install make, ar, ld & nm?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

    if I remenber correctly from my installation a couple of time ago on a solaris platform there were some softlinks to your mentioned files necessary ..

    did you issue find / - name ar 2>/dev/null

    I was able to find them in sbin subdirectory and made some

    softlinks to that files from /usr/bin ...

    otherwise you need to install that utilities from your solaris install dvd

    sorry now I've found my documentation concering this case :

    build links using this path /usr/ccs/bin/ ...

    make must also be available

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 16 Feb 9 16:11 ar -> /usr/xpg4/bin/ar
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 16 Feb 9 16:11 nm -> /usr/xpg4/bin/nm
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 16 Feb 9 16:11 ld -> /usr/xpg4/bin/ld

    Thanks for your reply osy45.

    I managed to install make from Solaris 8 CD 2.

    Now I have:

    # which make
    /usr/ccs/bin/make

    # which ar
    /usr/xpg4/bin/ar

    # which ld
    /usr/ccs/bin/ld

    # which nm
    /usr/xpg4/bin/nm

    How do I link ar and nm in /usr/xpg4/bin to /usr/ccs/bin?

    I figured it out.

    Login as Root

    # cd /usr/ccs/bin
    # ln -s /usr/xpg4/bin/ar ar
