    Angry Unanswered: Speeding up sort

    Hi all,

I have a rowset (got by joning a few tables) with around 4000 rows.
My problem is when i try to sort the results (on 4/5 VARCHAR columns), the sorting takes almost 1 full minute.

Without the sort, the query takes only 2/3 seconds to finish.
I would like to speed up the sort operation,is there anything i can do, am a newbie with tuning SQL queries, please advice.

    What is the sort_area_size ???
Are you sorting to disk ???

If so, is the temporary tablespace default next extent set to
    the value of sort_area_size ???

Am sorry i forgot to mention this, i don't have control over the database parameters in any way. They are all decided by the DBAs themselves.
