    Unanswered: connection error

    SETUP: 9iDB, 9i Forms

I am trying to connect to a data base on a remote server.

In sqlplus if I issue 'MDM_CONNECT/MDM_CONNECT@test3' I get connected. If that same connect string is used to connect to the user via forms I get ORA-12154 TNS: could not resolve service name.

Does something need to be set differently for forms???

    Kind of.
You have two different ORACLE_HOME trees
and therefore two different TNSNAMES.ORA files.

O Grand Poobah, your words are true. (you can lead some folks to knowledge, but you can't make them think).

Feeling lead to knowledge about now, but perhaps thinking also.

It occurred to me last night that perhaps the data server (remote)tnsnames.ora file needs to make the forms server (local/my desktop) tnsnames.ora. I think that is what you are saying to me.

Conceptually that seems incorrect (I am not saying that you are wrong). In my mind the Forms server is the one that needs to know how to access the data, but from what you say and I observe it is not so.

So I updated the tnsnames.ora file on my data server reset both servers and it still did not work. (As you would expect).

I humbled myself and prepared to ask for mercy when I took one last look at your e-mail ....

YES!! And I am their poster child!! (most of the time)

I thought it funny that you used the term "Oracle Home trees" when we were talking about 2 systems with separate Oracle Homes. Then it occured to me that Developer loads in ITS own tree.

    Thanks for the fishing lesson.
