    Unanswered: DB2 Tools

    Hi Gurus,

I am new to DB2 and while studying DB2 version 8 on Windows env , I came to know that there are many GUI db admin tools in DB2
    my questions are

    (1) all these GUI tools are available in Unix platform also or not
CC, Command Center, SQL Assist, Script Center, Performance Monitor etc

    (2) shall I try to learn database manipulations activities from CLP
or from GUI , how much useful GUI tools are in production env

    (3) can I handle or db activities from withthin CLP

Personally with experience of other RDBMS , it was obvious to me
that GUIs will only make things easier but when you dont have it on other platforms , there will be a real trouble for you to handle dbs

thax in advance for your great help !

    1. I'm using db2 8.1.4a on AIX 5.2 and the GUI tools are available

    2. Both, but i am using the GUI almost 90%

    3. Yes, actually the GUI is basically is just a front end, beneath is using CLP, there a show command button so you can see what it's doing.

The GUI tools are available on all supported platforms. They can also be run remotely using the administrative client (free) which is connected to any supported server.

The tools are written in Java and have a few bugs and a few quirks. One nice thing is that you can use a GUI wizard to build a script, and then "show command" and then use that in a script submitted from the CLI. There also some nice things in teh GUI like the visual explain. But most everything can be run from the CLI.

There are also 3rd party GUI tools, some of which are free. See the Useful DB2 Stuff thread.

The DB2 GUI has been hit-and-miss from version to version...

I use the command line for about 80% of my tasks, and it's good to know what commands are being done for when the GUI fails you.

Not that I'm suggesting it will...

The GUI is much better in V8, they finally seem to have the bugs out of the Java control center and they've added some nice tools.
