One of the Access tables in the application I am building will be populated via Excel. The data contained in the Excel spreadsheet itself comes off of a Cognos extraction that is in the form of a crosstab.

Unfortunately, the crosstab is of no help to me as I need a "flat" representation on Excel for my upload to work. How do I ensure that the Excel file from Cognos that is in the form of a crosstab is inverted to a flat form? This may sound confusing, so here is the example:

Excel file needed for upload into Access:

Customer / Product Type / Sale Month / Units Sold (#)
5001 / Widget1 / Jan-2003 / 10
5001 / Widget2 / Jan-2003 / 5
5001 / Widget1 / Feb-2003 / 15
5005 / Widget9 / Aug-2003 / 100
5005 / Widget10 / Aug-2003 / 40
etc etc

Excel representation from Cognos extraction:

SaleMonth, ProductType / 5001 / 5005 / Other customers...
Jan-2003
Widget 1 / 10 / 0 /
Widget 2 / 5 / 0 /
Feb-2003
Widget1 / 15 / 0
...
Aug-2003
Widget9 / 0 / 100
Widget10 / 0 / 40

Apparently, the Cognos report can only give it this way, according to the guys who will be giving me the data from Cognos. I would need to "turn this around" to make the kind of flat spreadsheet I am looking for.

Suggestions?
