Unanswered: how is date stored in oracle

Can anyone throw light on how actually Oracle stores date in a date datatype? And what is the default format when its retrieved from the database?

    Thanks in Advance

Re: how is date stored in oracle

Dates are stored as 7 bytes like this:
    1) Century 00-99
    2) Year 00-99
    3) Month 1-12
    4) Day 1-31
    5) Hour 0-23
    6) Minute 0-59
    7) Second 0-59

The default display format is defined by NLS_DATE_FORMAT.
