    Unanswered: ORACLE 10G on rhel3 login issue

    I just installed Oracle 10g on my linux system and everything went fine. But when I try to login under my SYSTEM account onto my database, it is giving me this error: ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only, until freed. Can anyone tell me what this means, and how to fix the error. Thanks

    00257, 00000, "archiver error. Connect internal only, until freed."
    // *Cause: The archiver process received an error while trying to archive
    // a redo log. If the problem is not resolved soon, the database
    // will stop executing transactions. The most likely cause of this
    // message is the destination device is out of space to store the
    // redo log file.
    // *Action: Check archiver trace file for a detailed description
    // of the problem. Also verify that the
    // device specified in the initialization parameter
    // ARCHIVE_LOG_DEST is set up properly for archiving.

    I checked my diskspace and I have 80% free. I also activated autoarchiving during the database setup. What file would I look into to check the archive parameter? Thanks in advance for the help.

    Check the alert log and trace file to see what error the archiver reported. Any underlying O/S errors will be reported in these files too.

    connect / as sysdba
    startup mount
    alter database archivelog
    alter system archive log start
    alter database open
