    Unanswered: Not able to connect 2nd DB in same Oracle Home

    Hi,
    I have one Oracle DB Instance IGFL running on host IGFL and everything is perfectly OK. The Listener.ora file is listed below which was configured 1 year back for Instance IGFL:

    # LISTENER.OAR Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC))
    )
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = igfl)(PORT = 1
    )
    )

    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /mnt41/oracle)
    (PROGRAM = extproc)
    )
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = igfl)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /mnt41/oracle)
    (SID_NAME = igfl)
    )
    )

    Now i created another DB Instance (HIGFL) on the same HOST and it is having the same ORACLE_HOME. The database was created OK. Then i used Net Configuration Assistance at SUN Server to configure another listener for the new DB Instance. I created listener named HIGFL_LISTENER which is listening at port=1526 and it has made entry in the same listener.ora file in $ORACLE_HOME. The new listener.ora looks like this:

    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC))
    )
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = igfl)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    )
    HIGFL_LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = igfl)(PORT = 1526))
    )
    )
    )

    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /mnt41/oracle)
    (PROGRAM = extproc)
    )
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = igfl)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /mnt41/oracle)
    (SID_NAME = igfl)
    )
    )
    During configuration itself, my HIGFL_LISTENER service has been started properly at port=1526. The status comes on screeen.

    I then when on to configure Local Net Service for HIGFL Instance and when i am testing this service connection during configuraiton, it is saying ORA-12154: TNS could not resolve service name given in connect descriptor. I saved the configuraiton & checked that it has added a valid entry for HIGFL in TNSNAMES.ORA file.

    Due to this, i am not able to connect to my new DB Instance HIGFL from remote location. Though its listener is running OK at port=1526. Please help me to resolve this issue. I really got stuck-up due to this. Please help.

    NOTE: I am noticing that in my modified listerner.ora, the entry for new listener is OK but entry for second section is not there. That is, the instance to be handled by this new listener. Does it not get created automatically by Net Conf. Tool..? WHY.??? do i need to edit this file & add those lines for my new instance HIGFL..?? Please help me in clarifying this aspect.

    Regards,

    Just as a point of order....
    A second/separate listener is/was not necessary.
    I run 5 DBs off of a single listener on one Sun system.

    Please post a copy of the tnsnames.ora file from the DB server.

    From the DB server itself (where both listeners are running) do,
    sqlplus scott/tiger@higfl
    where you replace the string after "sqlplus"
    where is contains a valid username/password
    plus the new TNS alias for the new DB you added to tnsnames.ora

    What does the following show?
    ps -ef | grep -i listen
