    Unanswered: ghost table after "drop table"

    i had a table and dropped it, i do a select * from cat; and i get the following:

    Code:
    SQL> select * from cat;

    TABLE_NAME                     TABLE_TYPE
    ------------------------------ -----------
    BIN$4BUwVSR6FingMAB/AQAJVA==$0 TABLE

    SQL>
    this is Oracle 10g on a Linux box. I'm the owner of the server so i have full admin. Anybody ever seen this and if so do you know how to get rid of that strange table? I get a line line like that every time i drop a table so if i create 20 talbes and drop them all i'll have 20 of those and i cant drop them.

    10G has a "recycle bin". Check the docs, the command to remove these tables is something like PURGE as far as I recall.

    found it:

    Code:
    drop table <tablename>;
    like u said puts it in the recycle bin,

    Code:
    purge table <tablename>;
    purges stuff from the recycle bin.

    now as soon as i find out how to bypass the recycle bin i'll be cool.

    Code:
    flashback table <tablename> to before drop;
    that will take the table out of the recycle bin (restore)

    It's interesting to note that RECYCLEBIN is just a synonym for USER_RECYCLEBIN so you can also do...
    Code:
    PURGE USER_RECYCLEBIN;
    Also if you want to purge the table at DROP then add PURGE keyword to DROP command.
    Code:
    DROP TABLE <table_name> PURGE;
    I believe you can disable the recyclebin altogether by setting init.ora parameter _recyclebin to FALSE although I would be tempted to run that past Oracle support.
