Unhappy Unanswered: Newbee can't log on to SQL plus

I am running Oracle 8i Personal Edition on my desktop. I keep getting the error of "ORA-01034: ORACLE not available" when trying to log on to SQL plus even as Scott / Tiger. Anyone know where I can get info on debugging the log on / connection errors for SQL plus.

The most likely cause of the error is that the database is not running.
It has not been started so there is nothing to connect to.
What evidence do you have that Oracle has been started & is available to be used?
You can lead some folks to knowledge, but you can not make them think.
The average person thinks he's above average!
For most folks, they don't know, what they don't know.

Assuming u r on windows platform.
USe the following command on the command prompt.

    \>set ORACLE_SID=<Oracle service name>
    \> svrmgrl
    \> connect internal
password: provide the password for internal user (default is oracle)

    \> startup

    This will startup the db
then try and login using userid.
